Emergency Management Victoria say there are multiple bushfires burning in the Abbeyard area that are not yet under control.
An Evacuate Now directive has been in place for Freeburgh, Harrietville, Smoko, Wandiligong and surrounding areas since Friday afternoon. Fire authorities are urging anyone in these areas to evacuate now and move to a safer location away from the fire.
Alpine Shire mayor Peter Roper said that while the situation was still concerning, towns in the shire had got through Saturday’s horrific conditions “as best as could be hoped”
“We had a little bit of drama, losing a home in Mt Buffalo and we also lost a phone tower up there.
“I’ve been told that the fire up in Towong Hill was horrific last night, so our thoughts are with people in that area.
He said small amounts of rainfall had helped but the region was bracing for more tough conditions later in the week.
