A firefighter working on a fire in the Omeo area in Victoria has died.
The State Control Centre (SCC) of Victoria confirmed a fatality had occurred while the firefighter, who was employed by Parks Victoria, was working to contain the fire.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm that a Forest Fire Management Firefighter from Parks Victoria has been involved in an incident while working on a fire in the Omeo area resulting in a fatality,” said a spokesperson from the SCC confirmed to 9News.
“Family and fellow emergency personal have been informed and will be supported.”
The SCC said the death was being investigated and a report will be prepared for the state coroner.
“The safety and well-being of our people is our highest priority,” said the SCC.
“The matter is being investigated by Victoria Police who will prepare a report for the coroner.”
Since July, 21 people including four firefighters, 6200 livestock and millions of wild animals have died in the NSW bushfires.
The Omeo bushfire is currently burning at advice level. Residents are being advised that upon leaving, they should travel south on the Great Alpine Road towards Bairnsdale.
