A California family has had a heart-stopping shock after their nine-year-old son found a loaded gun in a drawer at their Airbnb rental.
The Segarra family had arrived at the property for a getaway in Tahoe, California, and were just unpacking when their son found the weapon inside.
“It wasn’t hard to find, it wasn’t hidden, it wasn’t stashed under a bed or anything, it was in a drawer,” dad Jon told CNN.
He said the family had been deeply shaken.
“Whose is it, are they coming back for it, are we safe here?” he said.
“Do we have to wait for somebody to pull up in the middle of the night looking for their firearm? So I think that’s what kind of freaked us out.”
Next to the gun was a police badge belonging to a Santa Clara sheriff’s deputy.
Mr Segarra said they called police, who helped them secure the weapon.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the gun and badge belonged to one of their deputies, but that the weapon was a personal possession and not department-issued.
An internal investigation has been launched.
TurnKey, the company that manages the rental property, said they took the security and safety of their guests “very seriously”.
Mr Segarra said he hoped other property managers would take more initiative to ensure their rental properties were safe for guests.
“It’s a mistake, but all I’m thinking is, how do we leverage this as a learning experience?” he said.
