Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a 69-year-old sex worker was found in her unit in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
- Officers discovered Ms McRae’s body in her eastern suburbs unit
- A post-mortem examination has resulted in further testing to find the cause of death
- Police are appealing for any information as part of a taskforce established following the death
Kimberley McRae, who also went by several other names, lived alone on Mount Street in Coogee.
Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said Ms McRae was a sex worker and that police were looking at “all aspects” of her death.
“She was a local Coogee person, she was often seen around the Coogee foreshore,” he said.
“She was quite a distinct sort of person, everyone sort of recognised her … if you saw her you would know her.”
Police are pursuing Ms McRae’s employment as a sex worker as one line of inquiry in the investigation.
Her body was found inside the unit about 10am on Tuesday by officers from the Eastern Beaches Area Command.
Det Supt Doherty said Ms McRae’s body had been in the unit for some time and was only discovered after relatives raised concerns.
She was last seen on Tuesday, January 7 but there had been activity on her phone the following day.
Det Supt Doherty said the last known sighting of Ms McRae was at her unit seven days prior to the discovery of her body.
A post-mortem examination conducted yesterday did not conclusively determine how she died, and further tests are underway.
A taskforce has been created to investigate Ms McRae’s death, and police are appealing to the public for information.
Det Supt Doherty said she was known to run along the foreshore and the Coogee stairs of an evening.
“Kim had a distinct personal style with recognisable features and a wide circle of associates,” he said.
“Investigators are aware Kim worked in the sex industry and may be known to some of her associates as Isabella, Samantha and Sabrina.
“Of course, we’d be keen to speak to anyone who has information or knowledge of Kim’s social activities.”
