A lot has been made of Nick Kyrgios’ fierce rivalry with Rafael Nadal ahead of their clash at 4pm today.
But on a tragic day in the sporting world, a lovely pre-match gesture stole the show.
Ahead of the fourth-round clash, Nick Kyrgios donned the bright yellow Lakers guernsey, paying tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant after he was killed in a helicopter crash earlier today.
Bryant was travelling in his private helicopter when it crashed in the Los Angeles County suburb of Calabasas.
Eight other people were killed, with no survivors, including Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna (“Gigi”).
The 24-year-old was visually emotional as he honoured Bryant while entering the court through the Walk of Champions.
Social media fans were quick to pick up on the deliberate, kind gesture, praising Kyrgios for the move.
“That jersey… that’s dope,” Thanasi Kokkinakis said, adding Kyrgios would play in the jersey if he was allowed to.
“Nick Kyrgios you are the king,” one user wrote.
“Big respect to Nick Kyrgios tonight. Wearing a Lakers jersey all the way up to the point he wasn’t able to anymore,” another shared.

The move has continued the recent outpouring of supported for Kyrgios, who has been described as a ‘changed man’ in 2020.
