- The alleged offender remains in hospital under police guard
Police were called to a house in Liberty Parade, Heidelberg West over an aggravated burglary about 8:00pm.
It is believed a 28-year-old man broke into the house before assaulting the 61-year-old woman inside.
The woman died at the scene.
Another man, who likely knew the woman, tried to help and restrained the alleged offender.
A man, who appeared to be covered in blood, was being held by police outside the house but managed to wrangle himself free from police and ran at two cameramen who were filming the incident behind police tape.
He stomped on the camera and tripod for about 15 seconds.
Police would not say if the person who attacked the cameraman was the man arrested in relation to the murder, or the man who helped detain him.
The arrested man was taken to hospital where he remained under police guard this morning.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
