The victim has yet to be formally identified, but police believe him to be a 56-year-old from Canberra.
“He is known to have used a number of dating apps, and one of them is Grindr.”
Superintendent Doherty said investigators believe he drove from Canberra to the Batemans Bay area in a purple Honda Jazz on Sunday morning.
The car, which belonged to a friend, was also found dumped in bushland about 300 metres from the man’s body.
It has been seized for forensic examination.
“The Broulee area is a small community, we hope that someone may have information… or knowledge of people that use those dating apps that meet in that area around Broulee,” he said.
“It might be an area where people may have met before, they may have knowledge of the man in the car.”
Superintendent Doherty confirmed that police would conduct a forensic audit of the man’s phone to establish with whom he communicated on the app.
