The officers were not injured.
Regional detectives will investigate the incident and the Professional Standards Command has been notified.
The police shooting comes just days after a man was shot in a McDonald’s car park in Melbourne’s north-western suburbs.
The 36-year-old Ararat man allegedly drove at officers and rammed their cars off Mickleham Road in Tullamarine, just after midnight on Friday.
Police say the man and his female passenger had been acting suspiciously before officers tried to create a blockade around the car.
As the officers stepped out of their cars to approach the pair, the driver allegedly accelerated directly towards them, ramming the two cars.
A junior officer then shot the man in his right shoulder. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the injured man was taken to hospital in a stable condition with an upper body injury.
Another car, a white BMW sedan, got away. That car had the false plates, AEA 525, and police said they suspected those may have been swapped out.
