Just before 5pm, the truck’s driver was arrested by police. The man has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing while the truck was seized for scientific examination.
NSW Ambulance Duty Operations Manager Paul Delamont described the incident as ‘dreadful”.
“The patient’s injuries were extensive and paramedics had to work quickly at the scene – they want to get there as quickly as possible and do everything that can be done to help,” Mr Delamont said.
“As a paramedic when you hear a motorcycle and truck accident has occurred, it’s just gut-wrenching.
“This is a terrible incident on our roads this afternoon. Please be careful and look out for each other so we can avoid these tragedies,” he said.
All citybound traffic was diverted after the crash, and two citybound lanes on Broadway and all northbound lanes of Abercrombie Street were closed for most of the afternoon, with motorists diverted to head west on Broadway.
The road was fully open again just before 6pm.
Traffic is still very heavy and motorists should avoid the area.
Motorists who need to travel through the area are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time.
