We love a good videogame crossover, especially when it involves a decade-defining Aussie artist.
The Last Of Us Part II, one of 2020’s biggest videogames, is out today, and to commemorate the release, Tash Sultana has covered a song from the PlayStation 4 exclusive.
It’s called ‘Through The Valley’, a dark folk tune originally written by Shawn James and performed by the game’s protagonist, Ellie, in a 2016 reveal trailer.
In the song and accompanying video, Tash really gets around the moody biblical atmosphere of the track, singing: ‘Cause I walk through the valley of the shadow of death/And I’ll fear no evil because I’m blind’. Watch both versions below.
“This is the first time I’ve done a collab like this,” Tash said in a statement. “Usually it’s kinda just like writing sessions with other musos but this is for a game and it’s different as it’s not my usual style to venture into.”
“I’m completely honoured to be asked to do something like this. I can’t wait to see it in the game world.”
‘Through The Valley’ was a “#1 hit in several markets when featured in the 2016 reveal trailer for The Last Of Us Part II,” notes Director of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment Australia, Patrick Lagana.
“So recreating this with a phenomenal Aussie talent like Tash Sultana truly creates a special Australian moment to mark the launch of one of our biggest titles for PS4.”
The cover follows on from ‘Pretty Lady’, a single Tash recorded with Matt Corby to kick off a new era. That includes a new live stage show and a new album – the follow-up to the ARIA-winning, J Award-nom’d Flow State.
