A search is underway for a 21-year-old man who went missing while kayaking off North Stradbroke Island.
The man had paddled to nearby Peel Island earlier in the day with six friends and the group was heading back about 4:00pm when they ran into trouble.
Police said the wind and current worsened, increasing the time it took to make it home.
The group, who was travelling in four boats, were separated about 5:00pm in rain and failing light.
Authorities were contacted and police began the search about 5:30pm.
An hour later, two kayaks with four people on board were found near rainbow passage.
A third kayak containing two people was located at 9:00pm near Amity Banks, halfway between the two islands.
The 21-year-old Brisbane man is still missing, despite 14 water police and volunteer vessels searching through the night.
Due to poor conditions, an air search is yet to be launched.
The man was wearing a long sleeve shirt and red life jacket and was in a blue “Reflection” brand single seat kayak.
Volunteers from Coast Guard said it was cold and rainy overnight.
They said in a Facebook post that the first shift of crew, from Brisbane and Redlands, returned to base around midnight and were relieved by a second crew.
