Earlier, tech news service The Information reported that Alibaba was in discussions to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Zhaopin.
Heavyweights supporting the advance included CSL, up 1.4 per cent, BHP, up 1.4 per cent, and Commonwealth Bank, up 1 per cent.
Afterpay rallied 4 per cent in the tech sector, with EML Payments up 6.3 per cent, Nearmap, up 5.1 per cent, and Megaport up 3.9 per cent.
Challenger climbed 4.4 per cent after an upgrade to outperform at Credit Suisse.
